What are Ticks?

Ticks are small parasitic insects that feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and reptiles. There are over 800 tick species worldwide, but only a handful are common in Canberra.

The most common species include:

  • Paralysis ticks – Also called Ixodes holocyclus. They secrete a toxin that can cause paralysis in pets. Very small, poppy seed sized.
  • Brown dog ticks – Also called Rhipicephalus sanguineus. As the name suggests, they feed on dogs but also bite humans. Bigger than paralysis.
  • Bush ticks – Also called Haemaphysalis longicornis. They feed on a variety of hosts. Medium sized.
  • Cattle ticks – Also called Rhipicephalus australis. Mainly feed on livestock animals but occasionally bite humans. Larger in size.

Ticks go through four life stages; egg, larvae, nymph, and adult. They need a blood meal at every cycle to grow and survive.

These parasites wait on the edges of lawns, gardens, and trails waiting to latch onto a host. When a person or animal brushes up against them, they quickly climb on board. Then they find a suitable spot to attach for feeding.

The Risks

Ticks spread diseases that can make you or your fall ill:

  • Lyme disease – Causes fevers, rashes, joint pain
  • Tick paralysis – Can be fatal in pets
  • Babesiosis – Causes anemia in pets
  • Ehrlichiosis – Causes bleeding disorders in pets
  • Flinders Island fever – Causes headaches and muscle ache
  • Tick typhus – Causes rash, fever, headaches

They can also cause some health issues like epidermal infections and allergic reactions from their bites.

Signs of Infestation

  • Finding ticks on pets
  • Skin irritation or bites on people or pets
  • Lethargy, weakness, or uncoordinated movements in pets
  • Loss of appetite in pets

How to Control and Prevent

  • Clear tall grasses and brush around your property
  • Use residual pesticide sprays on your lawn
  • Treat pets with vet-approved prevention
  • Check for and remove ticks daily

Caution:

Never remove ticks with your bare hands. Always use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp them close to skin and pull them straight up. Call your vet if you can’t remove the entire tick.
